DTC Statuses

Modified on Thu, 9 Nov, 2023 at 1:46 PM

There are three statuses DTC's can be in. Please select the DTC status you haver questions about.

Permanent-

Starting in 2009/2010, vehicles now store emission related DTCs as Permanent DTCs. Unlike non-Permanent DTCs, Permanent DTCs can not be cleared by any conventional method like a battery disconnect or via any scan tool. Permanent DTCs will only clear automatically after the module storing the DTC, sees that the problem causing the code has been solved.

Please Note: It may take a few drive cycles for the DTC to clear if the issue causing the DTC is fixed. If the issue causing the DTC is never fixed, the Permanent DTC will never clear.

Pending-

'Pending' means it's detected a failure and it's waiting a defined number of key/drive cycles to see if it happens again.

Current-

Current code means that it's active and the reason for the check engine light.
