Permanent Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)
Overview:
Since 2009/2010, vehicles have begun storing certain Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) as Permanent DTCs. These codes differ from non-permanent DTCs because they cannot be cleared by traditional methods, such as disconnecting the battery or using a scan tool.
How Permanent DTCs Work:
Permanent DTCs will only be cleared automatically by the module storing the code once it detects that the underlying issue has been resolved. This design helps ensure that issues are properly addressed rather than temporarily bypassed.
Important Note:
It may take a few drive cycles for the Permanent DTC to clear, even if the root cause has been fixed. If the issue remains unresolved, the Permanent DTC will stay active indefinitely.
